What is EU ETS for maritime?
Shipping Enters the EU ETS
Since January 2024, the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) covers maritime transport. Shipping companies calling at EU ports must now monitor, report, and pay for their CO₂ emissions using emissions allowances. The rules apply to:
100% of emissions from voyages within the EU
50% of emissions from voyages to or from the EU
All emissions while at berth in EU ports
Non-compliance risks heavy financial penalties and reputational damage.
